This book is great for laying out a way to teach the gospel through these Pixar movies. It comes with summaries of the movie clips (and the exact minutes and seconds to start and stop the clip), commentary on the gospel connections in the clips, and discussion questions. I have used this for teenagers in my church, and my children's minister is using it for our summer Sunday school. It is a very flexible book. So, parts of it are way above the heads of little kids, and other parts of it are great for adults who have or have had children. You just pick what you need given your teaching context. This is the kind of stuff that I LOVE. In making the true Christian message accessible through Pixar movies, the authors have really done some incredible work. And they aren't stretching to make these connections. They are truly there under our noses and we can see so many elements of the Christian Gospel present.
Note This book is in outline form. It's meant for small groups, but it's just as cool to read by yourself. Whatever you're feeling. If you can get a group together, great! If you can't, that's great too! Just don't get too thrown off by that.
Zahl and Brewer have written a creative and helpful book for Christians who seek to engage culture and find common ground for discussion about matters within our cultural environment. They cover the following movies WALL-E, The Incredicles, UP!, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Cars, Ratatouille, and Toy Story 1, 2, & 3.
They examine these films in order to help connect the faith to everyday life, using illustrations from these films. They see gospel-related themes through the Pixar movies. In particular, they focus in on Pixar's ability to develop character in their movies instead of the dramatic events because characters drive the plot.
In the beginning of the book, they provide a suggested format for using these studies in a small group setting. Then, in each individual chapter, they provide a synopsis of the movie, key points in the movie with the relevant scene to play during the meeting (with precise time frames for the scene), and then a discussion of the themes in light of the Bible. I highly suggest this book, and it provides a great bridge for Christians to see gospel-related themes in places you wouldn't expect to find them.
